ABOUT STATISTICS

The main objective of this department is to provide students with a sound background in statistics as an interdisciplinary subject. Equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide variety of techniques, students are expected to become qualified statisticians who are competent to work in the industry, commerce, and government, and be able to develop valid solutions to real problems. In addition to comprehensive courses covered by the curriculum, students are involved in various activities with academics during regular meeting hours to gain more practical awareness toward their profession.

The department also directs its activities toward developing and executing coherent programmes of research. The graduates can be employed as experts or consultants by public organisations such as the State Institute of Statistics and the State Planning Organization. They can also work in research units of universities, banks, insurance companies, consultancy and research companies, and in quality control and improvement, production planning, or decision support departments of various companies.
